Zoo-pendous Day

April 23rd, 2012 // 11:25 am @

The weather is warming up; it is a great time to get your children out of the house to engage their mind
and play! One great idea is taking them to the zoo.

Not only is the zoo fun and exciting for the entire family, but there are plenty of learning opportunities.
We love the idea of creating a scavenger hunt for your kids to complete at the zoo. You can find a
printable scavenger hunt from the blog I Can Teach My Children. Your kids will love checking off each
animal as they find it. When they find the animal teach them about the different movements and noises
that animal may be known for; they will love repeating it!

If you are going to visiting the Smithsonian National Zoological Park, print off the Zoo Crew Family
Guide
. This colorful book will give you plenty of activities for every area of the zoo.

Continue the zoo-fun at home. Play games like “Monkey See, Monkey Do,” with your kids when you get
home. Have your child copy different animal gestures and noises that they learned that day. Then, at
night pick out a great animal book to read for their bedtime story.

In The Woods

In the Woods

by Tana French

Many of us are suckers for a good mystery.  This book is not like so many mysteries that are formulas that after the third or fourth one, you feel like you could write yourself.  This one has a unique story line with characters that stay with you long after you finish the book.  In the Woods takes place in modern day Ireland and is from the perspective of detectives working a case.  Tana French has two other books (and another coming this summer) that have some overlapping characters but, again, are completely unique.  See her for more information about Tana and her books: Read more.

Picture Frames – A Creative Use

April 19th, 2012 // 10:09 am @

A good friend of mine, a wonderful mother and decorator, Wendy Taylor of Learning Essentials Tutoring, came up with a great way to incorporate decorating and play into one using picture frames.  To match Wendy’s style, she went to a local barn sale and found a few ornate picture frames painted white.    She took the picture frames and converted them into play spots for her children.  However, you could use a more modern frame for the same idea.

She had “the wood cutter guy” at home depot take off the back of the frame for her.  She then hot glued one of three facings on the back to create either a magnet board, a chalk board or a Lego board all that can be hung on the  wall.

She has one hanging outside the kitchen so the kids can play there while she is cooking and the other two are hung in the playroom downstairs.

Wendy uses a vintage herb container to keep the Legos or magnets or chalk near its appropriate board.

Pacifiers or silly faces?

April 18th, 2012 // 11:30 am @

To Paci or not to paci?  That is the questions.  There are many theories out there about whether one should give their baby a pacifier.  The next question is how long a child should use a pacifier.  I once had a six year old boy tell me that my one year old was old enough to talk and therefore should not have a pacifier.  So the opinions run deep.  Regardless of your thoughts on pacifiers, there have been some crazy additions to the pacifier world!  If your child uses a pacifier maybe one of these would spice up a party conversation or be silly additions to a Halloween costume.

Maybe your just need one for a special occasion.

Or maybe you need some shock value when you go to the in-laws…

As always see more on .
